Hot hand¶
A proposed short-run elevation in success probability following recent successes, especially in repeated sports or skill performance.
Core Idea¶
Belief in streaks can be biased, but conditioning and selection mistakes also bias tests against true effects; player heterogeneity, shot difficulty and effect size must be modeled. Recent outcomes alter confidence, strategy, defense or underlying performance state, and sequence analysis tests whether conditional success exceeds an appropriate player and situation-specific baseline. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Hot hand belongs to behavioral statistics and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed behavioral statistics carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundaries, and comparison targets, then evaluate the performer task and trial sequence, binary or graded outcome, baseline success model, streak window, conditional probability or dependence statistic, shot or task difficulty and strategic response, selection and finite-sample bias correction, player heterogeneity and uncertainty and effect size are explicit.
Clarity¶

Manages Complexity¶
