Humphrey's Law¶
Consciously attending to a well-practiced automatic skill degrades it — declarative monitoring reinvested into a proceduralized pathway fragments and slows execution, which is why the expert chokes while the novice, who has no such pathway, does not.
Core Idea¶
Humphrey's law (the centipede effect) holds that consciously attending to a well-practiced automatic skill degrades its performance. A skill automated into procedural memory runs fluently below conscious monitoring; a reinvestment trigger — high-stakes scrutiny, an observer, a self-monitoring instruction — reintroduces declarative attention to moment-by-moment execution; and that reinvested attention disrupts the procedural pathway, slowing execution and stiffening movement. The effect is specific to proceduralized skill: a novice has no such pathway to interrupt.
Scope of Application¶
The law lives within the psychology of skilled performance — wherever an automated skill meets declarative scrutiny that can intrude on it.
- Motor learning and sport psychology — the home turf: the reinvestment account of expert choking (golf putting, dribbling, batting).
- The performing arts — musicians and actors fumbling when attending to fingering, breathing, or vocal mechanics.

Clarity¶
The law separates three things lay intuition runs together under "paying attention": beneficial concentration, beneficial monitoring, and destructive reinvestment. The same agent on the same task is helped by attention as a learner and harmed as an expert, so "should I focus on the mechanics?" becomes contingent on skill stage. It reframes "choking" from a deficit of nerve or character into a predictable mechanism — the wrong kind of attention on the right kind of skill.
Manages Complexity¶
A scattered set of breakdowns — the golfer, the musician, the surgeon, the centipede — collapses to the interaction of two binary variables: the type of attention (declarative versus procedural) and the stage of the skill (novice versus expert). The outcome reads off the cell those coordinates pick out, and the remedy inverts without case-by-case reasoning: protect the procedural pathway rather than redouble concentration, which is itself the reinvestment.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The law licenses a predictive lookup into that two-by-two grid — including the crossover (mechanics-focus aids the novice, degrades the expert) — an interventionist move that inverts the folk remedy (external-focus cues, automatised routines, dual-task practice), a diagnostic (fluent-but-stiffened specifically under scrutiny reads as reinvestment, not weak nerve), and a boundary-drawing move blocking over-extension to "thinking makes you worse."
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within skilled performance the transfer is as mechanism, because everywhere the substrate is the same automated-versus-deliberative split: the two-by-two lookup, the crossover, the inverted remedy, and the novice-control inference all carry intact from sport to the arts to surgery to instructional design. Beyond proceduralized skill it does not transfer — "overthinking ruins it" strips the precondition. The insights it rests on belong to the dual_process distinction and general equilibrium-disruption patterns; a nearby cousin, stereotype threat, produces surface-similar drops by a different mechanism (working-memory consumption).
