Hyleme¶
A transmedial, logically standardized minimal state- or action-bearing unit extracted from one concrete narrative variant for sequence reconstruction and comparison.
Core Idea¶
A hyleme is the minimal state- or action-bearing unit into which hylistic analysis resolves a concrete narrative variant. It is written as a logically and linguistically standardized proposition, normally with at least a logical subject and predicate and with objects or determinations where the source warrants them. The unit does not name a word, an isolated character, a theme, or an interpretive function. It records a proposition such as ‘Athena gives Chryse the sanctuaries’ or ‘Chryse is the daughter of Pallas.’ Christian Zgoll's hylistic framework introduced this formal unit so narrative material could be reconstructed completely, without first selecting only salient or functionally important elements.
Scope of Application¶
Hylemes support complete, standardized reconstruction of narrative variants before selective interpretation.
- Ancient myth analysis. Reconstructing Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and related narrative materials.
- Fragmentary evidence. Making explicit which narrative steps are attested, missing, or cautiously inferred.
- Transmedial comparison. Comparing a narrated material across text, image, film, ritual, or performance.
- Variant comparison. Aligning shared and divergent propositions among witnesses without inventing one canonical text.
- Sequence analysis. Separating discourse order from the logical and chronological order of narrated events.
- Stratification analysis. Detecting tensions that may motivate a later, separately argued account of layers.
Clarity¶
Name the concrete variant and medium before listing hylemes. Preserve every warranted state and action, not only the dramatic ones. Formulate each unit with a logical subject and predicate; if the agent is not recoverable, use an explicit unknown rather than silently converting a passive statement into an invented actor. Separate source wording from standardized formulation. Mark every reconstructed hyleme as implicit and state the inference that supports it.
Manages Complexity¶
Narrative manifestations mix plot-bearing clauses, states, epithets, temporal dislocation, embedded speech, background information, and medium-specific presentation. Hyleme analysis makes that complexity tractable by converting each warranted state or action into a comparable proposition while preserving provenance. The decomposition permits alignment: two variants can share a unit while placing it differently, omit one unit, assign its action to a different actor, or contradict its determination. Standardization reduces lexical and medial noise, but explicit source bindings keep the normalization reversible.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Fix one narrative variant and inventory the medial evidence that manifests it. 2. Identify every proposition bearing a state, action, process, or characteristic. 3. Split composite passages until each unit carries one minimal proposition under the declared criterion. 4. Normalize each unit into logical subject, predicate, complements, and determinations. 5. Record whether each element is explicit, supplied by grammar, or analytically reconstructed. 6. Classify temporal character, including punctual and relevant durative subtypes.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The strict parent is Decomposition because hyleme analysis breaks a manifested narrative variant into minimal propositions that can be inspected independently and recombined as a sequence. The technique transfers to requirements analysis, case reconstruction, and process mining whenever a complex account must be split into atomic claims with source provenance. What does not transfer automatically is the hylistic definition of narrative material, its transmedial commitments, its punctual/durative taxonomy, or its rules for reconstructing implicit narrative steps.
