Hypsos¶
The Longinian rhetorical sublime: a heightening of discourse that transports an audience through grandeur, intensity, and a mixed response of awe, astonishment, attraction, and fear.
Core Idea¶
Hypsos is the Greek rhetorical concept of height or sublimity associated especially with the treatise On the Sublime, where great thought and expression produce transport rather than ordinary persuasion. Grandeur of conception, strong emotion, figures of thought and speech, noble diction, and elevated composition combine to interrupt ordinary judgment and create astonishment. Later reception extends this structure into visual, architectural, and theatrical arts. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.

Clarity¶
The abstraction clarifies a crowded vocabulary by making the work or passage is analyzed through a Longinian elevation that transports or astonishes an audience, not merely through beauty, loudness, status, or generic emotional intensity the center of the account.
