I-Space (conceptual framework)¶
A knowledge-management framework relating information's codification, abstraction and diffusion through a three-dimensional space and social learning cycle.
Core Idea¶
Max Boisot's I-Space locates knowledge along how formally structured, generalized and widely shared it is, yielding characteristic public, proprietary, personal and common-sense regions and a dynamic learning cycle. Experience is codified into categories, abstracted into broader patterns, diffused among actors, absorbed in practice and then reshaped by feedback as it moves through the information space. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
