Idiolect¶
The evolving ensemble of linguistic forms, frequencies and usage tendencies characteristic of one individual speaker or writer.
Core Idea¶
An idiolect reflects dialect, register, community, biography, interlocutor and situation rather than an immutable personal code; distinctive features are probabilistic and corpus-dependent. A person's repeated lexical, phonological, grammatical, pragmatic and stylistic choices accumulate through learning and interaction, producing an individual distribution nested within wider language varieties. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of sociolinguistics and language variation. It is the domain-specific identity determined by the individual and identity evidence, language and variety, time period, speech or writing corpus, lexical, phonological, grammatical and pragmatic features, register and audience, comparison population, sampling, within-person variation, authorship uncertainty and change are explicit.
