Immiserizing growth¶
A trade-theoretic case in which output growth worsens a large exporting country’s terms of trade enough to reduce national welfare.
Core Idea¶
When growth is strongly biased toward an exported good and the country influences its world price, expanded supply can depress the export price relative to imports so the terms-of-trade loss exceeds the production gain. Growth shifts the offer curve and increases export volume; sufficiently inelastic foreign demand turns the induced price deterioration into a larger real-income loss.
