Imperfect self-defense¶
A partial criminal-law doctrine in some jurisdictions that mitigates homicide when a defendant honestly but unreasonably believed deadly force was necessary, without producing a complete acquittal.
Core Idea¶
Imperfect self-defense reduces liability when subjective defensive belief exists but one or more requirements of complete self-defense, commonly reasonableness, fail.[1] The honest belief can negate or mitigate the malice associated with murder under the jurisdiction's doctrine, while its unreasonableness prevents full justification. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of criminal law. It is partial mitigation between justified self-defense and unmitigated homicide. That residual remains recognizable when examples, notation, scale, or implementation change, but it disappears if the carrier is mistyped, the condition that the jurisdiction recognizes the doctrine and evidence supports its required subjective elements while a specified complete-defense element is absent fails, a neighboring object is substituted, or notation and topical resemblance replace the constitutive test.
