Inclusive Fitness¶
Redefine the quantity natural selection maximizes as an organism's own reproduction plus its effect on relatives' reproduction, each relative weighted by the coefficient of relatedness r, so a costly helping behaviour is favoured whenever rB exceeds C.
Core Idea¶
Inclusive fitness generalizes individual Darwinian fitness to count not just an organism's own reproduction but its effects on the reproduction of genetic relatives, each weighted by the coefficient of relatedness r — the excess probability the relative carries the same allele identical by descent. Developed by W. D. Hamilton (1964), it reframes selection as acting on the gene through all copies of itself. Its operational test is Hamilton's rule: a helping behaviour is favoured when rB > C.
Scope of Application¶
Inclusive fitness lives across the social-evolution subfields of evolutionary biology, wherever relatedness can be traced.
- Evolution of eusociality — the headline case: haplodiploid asymmetry (sisters at r = 0.75) makes sterile worker castes accessible.

Clarity¶
Inclusive fitness clarifies what selection actually maximizes when social behaviour is in play, dissolving the paradox of altruism: costly individual behaviour is gene-level selfishness, one fact seen at two levels. It sharpens the field's key distinction — inclusive fitness the quantity, kin selection the process, Hamilton's rule the test — which keeps the framework rigorous in the contested multilevel-selection regime.
Manages Complexity¶
Before the maximand is redefined, social behaviour presents as a list of standing anomalies — parental sacrifice, sterile workers, self-endangering alarm calls — each demanding its own account. Inclusive fitness compresses them into instances of one accounting, carried by the single scalar r, which absorbs a population's entire kin structure into one number per pairing and fixes how costly cooperation may evolutionarily be.

The framework licenses a diagnostic move — inferring from kin structure which behaviours selection should build, and reading behaviour back to its sustaining relatedness. The genuinely portable move — shifting the optimization unit to the aggregate of similar agents — is carried by the parent optimization.
