Information Avoidance¶
Actively decline information that is freely available because the anticipated content carries disutility — affective pain, identity threat, or an unwanted obligation — so the resulting non-knowledge is a chosen decision, not an absence.
Core Idea¶
Information avoidance is the active decision not to acquire freely available information when its anticipated content carries disutility — not because acquisition is costly, but because the agent expects knowing will be worse than not knowing. It is distinct from ignorance (information unavailable) and rational inattention (a cost-benefit calculation). Three anticipated disutilities drive it and can combine: affective cost (knowing would hurt), identity threat (a forced self-image revision), and obligation imposition (an unwanted duty to act). The resulting non-knowledge looks like ignorance, but its origin is a decision.
Scope of Application¶
Information avoidance is substrate-bound to agentive systems with utility over information states; its reach spans the agent-bearing fields below but stops at the agent/non-agent line.
- Financial behavior — the ostrich effect: checking portfolios less after losses.
- Medical testing — declining genetic, HIV-status, or screening tests after a worrying event.
- Moral choice — willful ignorance: paying not to learn whether one's choice harms another.
- Institutional and legal design — plausible deniability: firewalls engineered to avoid knowing.
- Negotiation — strategic non-knowing: avoiding a reservation price to hold a credible line.
Clarity¶
Naming information avoidance makes inspectable a state the agent can sincerely characterize as something else. Three routes to not-knowing share the same outward look — unavailable (ignorance), not worth the cost (rational inattention), and freely declined (avoidance) — and the analyst's question becomes diagnostic: was the signal free, and did the agent act to not-receive it? It also fixes the line between pre-receipt avoidance and the post-receipt failures (denial, motivated reasoning) it is confused with.
Manages Complexity¶
Instances of someone not knowing what they could have known are scattered across finance, medicine, moral choice, and institutional design, each otherwise reasoned about from scratch. The concept compresses that to a three-part diagnostic (free signal, anticipated disutility, recognizable not-receiving act), a typology of three drivers, and a matched lever family — so the four named instances become one structure differing only in which driver supplies the preserved benefit.
