Core Idea

Information Seeking is goal-directed human activity that begins with a perceived information need and proceeds through source selection, searching, encountering, evaluating, using, and sometimes abandoning information across formal and informal channels. [1]

Information seeking begins when a person or group perceives a gap, problem, curiosity, or task that may be changed by information. It includes deciding whether to seek, selecting people and systems, formulating and reformulating queries, browsing and encountering, judging credibility and relevance, integrating or sharing what is found, stopping, and sometimes avoiding or abandoning the process. System retrieval is nested inside this broader activity.

The operative boundary is exact: The need-to-use human information-behavior process surrounding retrieval remains uncovered. The abstraction is therefore not the topic named by its field, but the reusable role structure specified below.

Structural Signature

Recognition test. A case qualifies only when its roles can be mapped to the declared the perceived information need, the seeker and context, the source horizon, the seeking strategy, and when the characteristic boundary conditions are preserved. Surface vocabulary or a loose analogy is insufficient.

What It Is Not

  • Not database retrieval alone. Seeking includes the need, source choice, evaluation, use, and stopping around retrieval.
  • Not a fully specified query at the outset. Needs and language often change during the process.
  • Not always deliberate. People encounter information incidentally and monitor environments.
  • Not always beneficial. Seeking can amplify overload, anxiety, misinformation, or strategic delay.
  • Not information need as an objective deficit. Needs are interpreted through tasks, communities, and knowledge.
  • Not the opposite of information avoidance in every case. The same person may seek some aspects while avoiding others.

Scope of Application

The abstraction has a bounded but recurring habitat. These are literal applications of the same domain machinery, not cross-domain metaphors. [1]

  • Everyday-life information behavior. health, finance, relationships, hobbies, and civic questions prompt mixed-source seeking.
  • Professional work. experts consult colleagues, records, standards, and search systems.
  • Education and research. learners reformulate questions and evaluate evidence over extended tasks.
  • Health communication. risk, emotion, trust, and uncertainty shape source selection and stopping.
  • Digital search. engines and platforms mediate one part of the wider process.
  • Library services. reference interviews and information literacy support articulation and evaluation.
  • Collaborative seeking. teams divide searches, pool findings, and negotiate sufficiency.

Clarity

A search log records only visible system interaction. It may miss earlier need formation, consultation with people, information encountered outside the system, later use, and reasons for stopping. Conversely, a person can seek information through conversation or observation without issuing a query.

A useful audit proceeds in order: identify the candidate roles, verify their types and quantifiers, apply the recognition test, and then test every stated exclusion. If a case supplies only the broad parent pattern while dropping the domain accent, it is not Information Seeking.

Manages Complexity

The abstraction nests several levels that otherwise get conflated: information behavior broadly, purposeful seeking, interaction with retrieval systems, and fine-grained search actions. That nesting lets system metrics be connected to human goals without treating clicks as complete explanations.

The compression remains accountable because every simplification has a named validity condition. A user can ask which role is missing, which assumption fails, and which neighboring abstraction should replace the candidate instead of treating the label as an unanalyzed bundle.

Abstract Reasoning

The reasoning pattern is deliberately typed: definitions establish identity, calculations or constructions establish consequences, and empirical or institutional evidence establishes whether a real case instantiates the roles. One kind of support cannot silently substitute for another.

Knowledge Transfer

The human need-to-use process transfers across settings where people seek information. Search and Retrieval is the portable system-facing parent, while Information Scent describes cues guiding navigation. The full named abstraction remains grounded in information-behavior research and its contextual, affective, and practice-based models.

The transfer boundary follows from the classification test: The activity recurs across work, education, health, and everyday life, while need state, seeker context, channel choice, search episodes, uncertainty, evaluation, stopping, and use remain information-behavior semantics. The safe portable move is to name the broader parent when the home-domain machinery is absent and to retain the domain name only when literal recognition succeeds.

Canonical: nested process

A researcher recognizes a literature gap, asks a colleague for terminology, searches a database, follows citations, changes the question after reading, judges methodological credibility, and stops when new sources repeat known findings. Retrieval produced documents, but the seeking process also included need formation, interpersonal sourcing, reformulation, evaluation, and stopping. [1]

Applied / In Practice: health uncertainty

A patient notices a symptom, delays searching because of fear, consults family, reads a hospital site, encounters alarming social posts, asks a clinician, and decides which advice to act on. Access ranking alone cannot explain the path; emotion, trust, risk, source authority, and avoidance shape both the search and its use. [1]

Structural Tensions

T1: Need articulation versus evolving understanding. Systems ask for explicit queries while seekers often learn what they need through interaction. Diagnostic: Can the design support reformulation without treating it as error?

T2: Comprehensiveness versus satisficing. More searching can improve coverage but consume time and increase overload. Diagnostic: What stopping criterion is appropriate to the stakes?

T3: Accessibility versus credibility. Easy sources may dominate attention despite weak authority. Diagnostic: How are effort and trust being traded?

T4: Personalization versus exposure diversity. Tailored results reduce effort while narrowing the source horizon. Diagnostic: What relevant alternatives are systematically hidden?

T5: Seeking versus avoidance. Information can reduce uncertainty or threaten identity, emotion, or desired deniability. Diagnostic: Which part of the need is approached and which is avoided?

T6: Domain autonomy vs prime reduction. Search and Retrieval covers system operations, but human need, context, source choice, evaluation, use, and stopping remain residual. Diagnostic: Would the process still exist without a retrieval system? If yes, retain the distinct domain node.

Structural–Framed Character

The five-criterion aggregate is 0.75 (framed). The classification is reasoned rather than cosmetic:

  • Vocabulary travels — framed (0.75). The operative vocabulary retains the home-domain types named in the Structural Signature even when a thinner parent pattern travels.
  • Evaluative weight — structural (0.25). The score records whether applying the abstraction requires a normative or interpretive judgment in addition to structural recognition.
  • Institutional origin — framed (0.75). The score records whether the abstraction is constituted by a scholarly, legal, technical, or administrative convention rather than merely discovered in nature.
  • Human-practice bound — framed (1.00). The score records how far the named roles depend on a human practice, measurement regime, language, or institution.
  • Import versus recognize — framed (0.75). Beyond its home habitat, use of the name increasingly becomes import by analogy rather than recognition of the same mechanism.

The portable skeleton is: a goal-directed agent detects a gap, explores sources iteratively, evaluates what is found, and stops or acts under constraints. That skeleton belongs to the related parent abstractions; it does not make the fully accented node a prime. Its character: framed, with a real structural core whose recognition remains bounded by domain-specific types and validity conditions.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

This section decides why Information Seeking is a domain-specific abstraction rather than a prime.

Structural core: A goal-directed agent detects a gap, explores sources iteratively, evaluates what is found, and stops or acts under constraints. This relational skeleton can recur outside the home domain and is the part legitimately carried by broader primes.

Domain accent: Information needs, human context and affect, documents and people, search episodes, relevance, credibility, use, avoidance, and information-science models. Remove those types and constraints and the result may still resemble the skeleton, but it is no longer recognized as this named abstraction.

Why it does not clear the prime bar: Goal-directed search travels broadly; Information Seeking is the human information-behavior process that surrounds and exceeds technical retrieval. Cross-domain transfer is therefore routed through the parents, while the named entry remains available for precise in-domain diagnosis.

  • Search and Retrieval. covers locating and returning objects from systems.
  • Information Scent. describes cues predicting where useful information lies.
  • Information Avoidance. is a neighboring response to threatening or costly information.

These are prose relations only. They do not create structured DAG edges, and placement must still pass the live endpoint, redundancy, and cycle checks recorded in the bundle's placement memo.
