Initiative loss is the operational failure mode in which an actor's decision cycle becomes structurally subordinated to an opponent's move-tempo, so each action is a forced response to the opponent's prior move rather than a self-initiated action that shapes the situation. In Boyd's terms, the opponent operates inside the actor's OODA loop. Its signature has three parts: an adversarial context of interleaved moves, a tempo asymmetry, and a response-forced posture. Crucially, reacting faster does not recover initiative — faster reaction is still reaction.

Its most consequential clarification is the remedy — it overturns the intuitive "react faster," relocating the failure to the structure of the move-space rather than response speed.
