Innateness Hypothesis

The contested hypothesis that human language acquisition begins with language-specific innate structural knowledge or constraints, rather than deriving linguistic competence from experience and domain-general learning alone.

Core Idea

The innateness hypothesis in linguistics holds that the human initial state includes some language-specific knowledge, representational structure, or acquisition constraints. On this view, exposure selects, triggers, or tunes a biologically supplied system; it does not construct every relevant grammatical generalization through unconstrained induction. Chomsky's generative program made this explanatory claim central to theories of acquisition and linguistic competence.

The identity is a family of claims, not one invariant gene or neural module. Strong versions posit rich universal grammatical principles; weaker versions posit language-specific biases or architectural constraints. A generic ability to learn, a vocal tract, or general intelligence is innate in a broader sense but does not by itself satisfy the language-specific claim.

Scope of Application

The hypothesis structures research on syntactic acquisition, phonology, morphology, semantic knowledge, learnability, language universals, species specificity, developmental timing, and artificial-language learning. Gold's identification-in-the-limit results sharpened questions about what can be learned from restricted presentations, although formal non-identifiability does not automatically describe children's actual evidence or algorithms.

Clarity

Specify what is innate, how language-specific it is, which learning target it constrains, what evidence the child receives, what competing learner is being excluded, and what observation could revise the claim. Separate dispositional capacity from represented knowledge and separate a logical learnability argument from an empirical inventory of child-directed input.

Manages Complexity

The hypothesis converts a vast acquisition problem into a division of explanatory labor: initial endowment, environmental data, learning procedure, maturation, and resulting competence. This exposes hidden assumptions in both nativist and empiricist models and makes their predictions comparable.

  2. Inventory the relevant input and developmental conditions.
  3. State the learner's domain-general resources.
  4. Test whether those resources and that input can support acquisition.
  5. Identify any residual constraint attributed to the initial state.
  6. Compare nativist and non-nativist models on matched evidence.
  7. Seek discriminating developmental or experimental predictions.
  8. Calibrate the hypothesis rather than inferring a maximally rich innate grammar.

Knowledge Transfer
