Innovator's Dilemma¶
The pattern in which a well-run incumbent, by rationally listening to its best customers and enforcing gross-margin discipline, systematically defunds disruptive innovations and is displaced by entrants whose separate performance trajectory eventually intersects the mainstream.
Core Idea¶
The innovator's dilemma is the pattern in which a well-run incumbent, doing exactly what sound management recommends — listening to its best customers, chasing higher margins — systematically fails to fund disruptive innovations and is displaced by entrants it could observe but not rationally fund. The mechanism is the firm's own resource-allocation process: a disruptor's product is initially worse on every dimension current customers value and flunks the gross-margin filter, then improves along its own trajectory until it meets the mainstream. The failure is adherence to sound management, not mismanagement (Christensen).
Scope of Application¶
It lives across the strategy and disruption subfields — wherever a firm with a current-customer-voice-and-gross-margin allocation process faces a low-end entrant.

Clarity¶
The dilemma severs the assumed link between well-managed and safe: the customer-listening, margin-maximizing process is itself the failure mechanism, so prescribing more of it accelerates collapse. It sharpens the sustaining-versus-disruptive distinction, localizing danger not at the disruptor's debut but at the future intersection point, and explains why "just fund the disruptive product" fails.
Manages Complexity¶
A sprawl of industry-specific collapses reduces to one mechanism and a few parameters: which dimensions the incumbent wins, whether the entrant is on that trajectory or its own, where they intersect, and whether the entrant flunks the margin filter. From these a two-branch test predicts the outcome nearly mechanically, with the corollary that excellent management is the cause of death on the disruptive branch.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The dilemma licenses a diagnostic move classifying the entrant by trajectory not current quality; a predictive move locating the danger at the intersection point; an inverting diagnostic severing well-managed from safe; an interventionist move predicting which fix fails (fund it inside) and which works (separate organization); and a boundary-drawing move distinguishing rational failure from a sunk-cost fallacy.

Within strategic management the dilemma transfers as mechanism — the fork, trajectory prediction, and separate-organization remedy carry across disk drives, steel, photography, and mobile, because the firm-strategy substrate is genuinely present. Beyond it the cross-domain invocations (overspecialized species, militaries fighting the last war) are analogy: they share the outcome but not the gross-margin machinery. The genuine recurrence is local_optimum under environment shift plus path_dependence, with creative_destruction the macro counterpart.
