Interpersonal Communication¶
Study meaning as co-constructed turn by turn in dyadic exchange, reading every utterance on two simultaneous layers — content and relational — and tracking a small running state (common ground, face, repair) whose updates give the trajectory.
Core Idea¶
Interpersonal communication studies meaning-making in dyadic and small-group exchange, where meaning is not transmitted but co-constructed turn by turn between parties embedded in an ongoing relationship. The unit is the exchange, not the message: what a turn means depends on non-verbal channels, relational history, and situational frame. Following Bateson and the Palo Alto group, every utterance carries both a content level and a relational level, jointly regulated across turns.
Scope of Application¶
Interpersonal communication lives across the applied dyadic and small-group settings of communication studies, wherever meaning is co-constructed turn by turn under genuine joint regulation.

Clarity¶
The central move displaces the transmission model, relocating the unit from message to exchange and making legible why the same words land differently depending on the prior turn. Its most load-bearing distinction separates the content level from the relational level, revealing that an argument about a fact is often a relational contest over standing in content costume — one no factual correction settles.
Manages Complexity¶
A live exchange is a high-dimensional flux of channels, history, and frame. The field compresses it twice: the content/relational decomposition resolves every utterance into two layers, and the exchange is tracked as a small bundle of running state — common ground, each party's face, the relational definition, the open repair, accommodation direction. The trajectory reads off how that state updates.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The field licenses diagnostic reasoning (locating a breakdown on the content or relational layer by a counterfactual test), interventionist repair matched to the layer (with the prediction that fixing the wrong layer fails), boundary-drawing that makes the exchange the unit and bounds the regime to joint co-construction, and trajectory prediction from the running state updates.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within communication studies the playbook transfers richly across dyadic settings — but because the underlying primes are shared, not because one mechanism ports. "Interpersonal communication" is a field marker and substrate label; the structural work is done by parents common_ground, communication_repair, face-management, accommodation, encoding_and_decoding, trust, and reciprocity. That computer-mediated communication preserved those primes while dissolving the face-to-face packaging shows they are the carriers.
