Invasive-Species Release¶
Explain a species' runaway spread not by its biology but by its arrival in a habitat missing the predators, pathogens, and competitors that had bounded its population in its native range.
Core Idea¶
Invasive-species release is the ecological pattern in which a species arrives in a habitat lacking the predators, pathogens, parasites, competitors, and resource limits that held its population in check at home. Its intrinsic growth, dispersal, and consumption functions then run without the biological resistance that had calibrated them, producing rapid, often exponential, and frequently damaging spread. The cause sits in the missing relationship, not the organism.

Clarity¶
The concept relocates an invader's success from the organism to the relationship. The naive reading blames an intrinsically aggressive species and invites treating the trait; the release framing shows the same parameters reach a bounded equilibrium at home. The practitioner's question shifts from "what is special about this species?" to "which controlling pressures are missing here, and will one reassemble?"
Manages Complexity¶
Invasion biology faces a heterogeneous catalog of disasters — kudzu, the cane toad, the zebra mussel, lionfish — each tempting a bespoke explanation. The release framing compresses the catalog to one skeleton: track the actor's intrinsic parameters, the absent controlling context, the propagule pressure, and the establishment-then-impact phase structure. One shared intervention family — prevent, detect, suppress, restore — then applies across every case.
