The iron law of oligarchy is Michels's thesis (1911) that large democratic organizations inevitably develop oligarchic leadership: a small professional stratum comes to dominate, displacing the founding participatory intent regardless of formal commitments to internal democracy. Three interlocking mechanisms drive it — technical necessity (scale demands a permanent apparatus), mass psychology (members are passive and ratify rather than deliberate), and leader psychology (officeholders entrench their own security). Together they produce oligarchic crystallization.
