ISO 6344¶
Standardize the determination and P-grade designation of fused-alumina and silicon-carbide grain-size distributions used in coated abrasives, separating macrogrits P12–P220 from microgrits P240–P5000.
Core Idea¶
ISO 6344 is the international-standard series that defines how grain-size distributions are determined and designated for fused aluminium oxide and silicon carbide abrasive grains used in coated abrasives such as abrasive paper and cloth. It supplies the measurement-and-classification contract behind P-grit labels. The current 2021 parts separate macrogrit sizes P12 through P220 from microgrit sizes P240 through P5000.
The abstraction is not “particle size” in general. It binds a material scope, product context, sampling and test procedures, distribution requirements, size designations, and conformance decision. A P designation names a standardized grain-size distribution class rather than one exact diameter shared by every particle. It enables abrasive producers, coaters, purchasers, laboratories, and users to communicate performance-relevant size ranges without inventing bilateral definitions.
Scope of Application¶
The series applies to production control, incoming inspection, supplier qualification, laboratory testing, procurement specifications, product labeling, and dispute resolution for the covered coated-abrasive grains. Part 2 covers macrogrits P12 to P220; Part 3 covers microgrits P240 to P5000.
Reference-grade application begins with the product and material. A loose abrasive, bonded grinding wheel, diamond powder, or nonstandard mineral may require another specification. A laboratory must then select the current edition, follow its sampling and test procedure, and report enough information to reproduce the conformance decision.
Clarity¶
The “P” prefix is diagnostic but not sufficient. It should be tied to coated abrasives and the ISO/FEPA distribution system. A bare number such as “120 grit” can be ambiguous across grading regimes; “P120 under ISO 6344-2:2021” identifies a governed class.
Macrogrit and microgrit are not merely informal adjectives. They select separate standard parts with different size ranges and measurement regimes.
Manages Complexity¶
Abrasive grains are heterogeneous. Without a shared standard, every supplier could define “fine” and “coarse” differently, forcing purchasers to interpret private sieves, sedimentation methods, and tolerances. ISO 6344 compresses this negotiation into an editioned label and test contract.
The split between macrogrit and microgrit routes samples to methods suited to different size ranges. Distribution requirements manage both oversize particles that can cause deep scratches and excessive fines that alter cutting behavior.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- A grade is edition-relative. The same label without a part/year is an incomplete conformance claim. 2. Distribution beats point estimate. Tail fractions can matter to abrasive behavior even when mean size matches. 3. Boundary routing prevents method error. P220 and P240 belong to different parts despite adjacent numbering. 4. Standardization enables substitution conditionally. Two suppliers' grains are comparable on size distribution, not necessarily identical in shape, toughness, or coating performance.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the abrasives supply chain, ISO 6344 transfers a P-grade meaning across material producers, coaters, distributors, test laboratories, and users. National adoptions and commercial catalogs may reference the same series, but translations must preserve edition and scope.
The wider transferable pattern is reference standardization: define a measurand, sample, method, categories, tolerances, and designation so independent parties can exchange goods. Other particle standards instantiate that pattern but are not ISO 6344.
