Joke¶
A bounded humorous communication that establishes an interpretive frame and then uses a punch line, incongruity, wordplay, reversal, exaggeration, or anti-climax to trigger amusement or laughter.
Core Idea¶
Jokes range from narratives and one-liners to riddles, puns, anti-jokes and performance routines; their success depends on shared knowledge, timing, delivery, audience, benignity, social relationship, translation and ethical context. A setup activates expectations and withholds a key relation; the terminal move forces reinterpretation, resolves or heightens incongruity, and rewards the audience for recognizing two scripts, a rule violation, or a socially licensed transgression. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
