Karne Parah¶
Use the rare Masoretic Great Pazer/Qarne Para accent as a disjunctive syntactic and cantillation sign, conventionally paired with a preceding Yerah ben Yomo and encoded separately from its tradition-specific sung realization.
Core Idea¶
Karne Parah is the English surface used here for the Tiberian Masoretic accent more systematically transliterated Qarne Para and also called Pazer Gadol or Great Pazer. Its identity is not the visual sign alone. It is a named disjunctive accent in the prose, or Twenty-One-Books, accent system: a mark placed on a word, occupying a particular hierarchical and syntactic role, conventionally associated with a cantillation realization, and normally preceded by the special conjunctive Yerah ben Yomo. Sung Jin Park's technical inventory lists Great Pazer, or Qarne Para, among the disjunctive accents of the Twenty-One Books.[1] That functional package is what makes the candidate an autonomous notation-and-performance abstraction rather than Unicode trivia.
The frozen evidence packet is defective in a precise and recoverable way. It captured the Unicode character page for U+059F, whose text is only a self-redirect to Karne parah. The Unicode Standard nevertheless independently confirms that U+059F is HEBREW ACCENT QARNEY PARA, aliases it with Pazer Gadol, and classifies it in the Hebrew cantillation-mark range.[2] Encoding is an implementation of the accent's written carrier, not the source of its grammatical identity. This dossier therefore preserves the frozen hash, rejects the redirect as sufficient evidence, binds the interpretation to the actual accent literature, and queues a source-binding repair for later implementation.
Great Pazer has a stable relational role. In the prose accent system it is a rare disjunctive, historically described as a greater form of Pazer, and it receives its own sign and hierarchical treatment. The accent immediately before it is Yerah ben Yomo or Galgal, a conjunctive whose relevant prose-system role is specifically to serve the following Qarne Para. Price's syntax describes the sign's horn-like form, its name, its segmental position, and its companion relation; the Biblia Hebraica Quinta foreword likewise records the Galgal/Yerah form before Qarne Para in the Twenty-One Books.[3] The recognition test therefore needs the accent class, host word, accentual system, companion sequence, and textual witness—not just two dots and a V-shaped stroke.
Rarity must be stated accurately. Qarne Para occurs once in the Torah, at Numbers 35:5, and also occurs in Esther, but those famous cases are not the whole corpus. Technical concordance and Leningrad-text statistics count sixteen occurrences in the Twenty-One Books. Numbers 35:5 is especially memorable because Yerah ben Yomo marks alpayim and Qarne Para marks the following ba-ammah in the first of four phrases describing two thousand cubits. The pair makes one syntactic-cantillation unit. Treating the accent as having only two occurrences would confuse two frequently discussed liturgical examples with the accent's complete textual distribution.
The melodic surface varies by reading tradition, whereas the written accent and its accentual role are comparatively stable. A Spanish–Portuguese cantillation study, for example, transcribes the Yerah-ben-Yomo–Karnei-Para pair in Numbers 35:5 in London and Amsterdam–New York realizations.[4] A reference entry should therefore describe melody as a tradition-indexed realization and avoid presenting one Ashkenazi, Sephardi, or Portuguese contour as universal. The abstraction survives because a reader can identify the same governed accent across witnesses, fonts, transliterations, and melodic traditions by its name, code point, disjunctive function, companion, and placement constraints.
Structural Signature¶
- The accentual system. The case is indexed to the Tiberian prose/Twenty-One-Books cantillation hierarchy, not an unspecified system of musical marks.
- The host word. The sign is attached to a stressed word and participates in parsing a verse into accentual units.
- The disjunctive role. Great Pazer marks a syntactic or rhetorical division rather than merely decorating the consonantal text.
- The rare sign. Its conventional graph is encoded as Unicode
U+059F, but typography may vary without changing the accent. - The companion relation. In its characteristic prose-system construction it follows Yerah ben Yomo/Galgal.
- The hierarchy. Its rank and domain constrain which conjunctives can serve it and which larger disjunctive governs the segment.
- The textual witness. Recognition records the biblical book, verse, word, and edition or manuscript rather than relying on folklore about rarity.
- The reading tradition. A declared community or chant tradition supplies the melodic realization.
- The name ledger. Qarne Para, Qarney Para, Karne Parah, Pazer Gadol, and Great Pazer are controlled surfaces for one accent.
- The encoding boundary. Character identity, glyph rendering, grammatical function, and melody are linked but not collapsed.
What It Is Not¶
- Not merely
U+059F. A code point encodes the written mark but does not by itself specify accentual hierarchy or chant. - Not Yerah ben Yomo. That is the preceding conjunctive companion, encoded separately.
- Not ordinary Pazer. Pazer/Qatan and Great Pazer have different signs and distributions despite the family name.
- Not Telisha Gedola or Telisha Qetana. Visual or melodic comparison does not make those accents synonyms.
- Not punctuation alone. Masoretic accents jointly bear syntactic, stress, and cantillation information.
- Not one universal tune. Communities realize the written accent through different melodic grammars.
- Not a claim that only two instances exist. The Torah and Esther cases are salient examples within a larger sixteen-occurrence prose corpus.
Scope of Application¶
Karne Parah is literal when a text, analysis, encoding, or performance identifies the Great Pazer accent and preserves its system, word, companion, and tradition-indexed realization.
- Masoretic syntax. Parsing the subordinate segment governed by the rare disjunctive.
- Biblical editions. Verifying its placement in a declared manuscript or critical text.
- Liturgical reading. Learning the appropriate community-specific realization of the accent pair.
- Digital text. Encoding and normalizing the nonspacing mark without confusing it with neighboring accents.
- Font engineering. Positioning the mark above a consonant while preserving character identity.
- Corpus concordance. Counting occurrences with book-system distinctions and edition provenance.
- Comparative cantillation. Comparing melodies while holding the underlying accent sequence fixed.
- Pedagogy. Teaching a rare governed sequence as part of the accent system rather than as an isolated curiosity.
Clarity¶
A clear account names the accent system, distinguishes Great Pazer from ordinary Pazer, identifies Yerah ben Yomo as its preceding companion, and states whether a claim concerns syntax, glyph, code point, stress, or melody. It reports rarity with a denominator: one Torah occurrence does not mean one occurrence in the entire Tanakh. It cites the textual witness and does not infer an accent from visual resemblance alone. U+059F should be written as an encoding fact, not a definition. A melodic example names its reading tradition and source. Transliteration variants should be normalized without suggesting that Para, Parah, Farah, Qarne, Qarney, and Karnei name different accents. The frozen Unicode redirect is documented as provenance failure rather than silently substituted for the intended article.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction coordinates four layers that are easy to conflate: textual segmentation, stress-bearing placement, sung realization, and digital character rendering. A name-and-role packet lets an editor, cantor, linguist, and software implementer refer to the same accent even though each works on a different layer. The companion relation narrows recognition further: a rare symbol after Yerah ben Yomo in the prose system is not an arbitrary ornamental mark. Complexity returns through edition variants, font positioning, transliteration, differing melodies, and popular accounts that repeat only the best-known occurrences. A disciplined entry records each layer separately, treats witness and tradition as parameters, and makes disagreements locatable rather than averaging them into one invented universal form.

Knowledge Transfer¶
Karne Parah demonstrates how to analyze a rare sign without reducing it to shape. The transferable method asks what system licenses the sign, what relation it performs, what companions constrain it, what substrate carries it, and which realization conventions vary. That method transfers to neumes, prosodic notation, editorial sigla, and specialized mathematical symbols. What does not transfer is the specific Tiberian hierarchy, the Yerah companion, or any local tune. Rarity increases the need for witness control: when examples are few, one famous passage can distort the perceived distribution unless the entry separates a canonical example from the full concordance.

In Numbers 35:5, the first occurrence of the phrase involving two thousand cubits carries Yerah ben Yomo on alpayim and Qarne Para on the following ba-ammah. The analysis treats the two marked words as a governed accentual sequence: the first accent connects into the second, while Great Pazer supplies the disjunctive role. A digital edition may encode the second mark as U+059F; a synagogue tradition supplies its sound. Neither the Unicode value nor one recorded melody alone reconstructs the syntactic unit.[2]

Applied / In Practice¶
A corpus tool finds U+059F sixteen times in a Leningrad-based prose-text corpus. It does not announce sixteen identical melodies. Instead it verifies the code point, records book and word, checks the preceding accent, and exports occurrences for comparison with an accent-syntax grammar. A font test separately confirms that the nonspacing mark anchors above the correct consonant. The same data can support textual, grammatical, and typographic work without confusing their claims.[3]

Structural Tensions¶
- Rare exemplar vs. complete distribution. Famous Torah and Esther instances dominate memory. Diagnostic: Has the count been checked across all Twenty-One Books?
- Glyph vs. accent. Encoding invites a character-only definition. Diagnostic: Can the account state the sign's grammatical relation without naming Unicode?
- Stable notation vs. variable melody. The mark persists while tunes vary. Diagnostic: Is every melodic claim indexed to a reading tradition?
- Great Pazer vs. ordinary Pazer. Family resemblance encourages collapse. Diagnostic: Are code point, companion, and distribution independently verified?
- Conjunctive companion vs. disjunctive host. Adjacent rare marks are easily swapped. Diagnostic: Which word bears Yerah and which bears Qarne Para?
- Witness fidelity vs. normalized typography. Modern fonts aid reading but can erase manuscript distinctions. Diagnostic: Is the visual claim about a witness or a normalized edition?
- Source preservation vs. source correction. Frozen provenance must not conceal a broken redirect. Diagnostic: Are the bad binding and its authoritative replacement both recorded?
Structural–Framed Character¶
The structural component is a named disjunctive accent, its host word, its hierarchical domain, the preceding Yerah relation, and its function in segmenting and chanting the text. The frame is the biblical witness, prose accent system, transliteration, font, Unicode representation, and reading tradition. Changing a melody or glyph can preserve the accent; changing the hierarchy or treating the companion as the same sign does not.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
The transferable core is conventional sign + governed relational position + system-specific interpretation + variable realization. The domain accent is Tiberian Masoretic syntax, Great Pazer, Yerah ben Yomo, biblical witnesses, Hebrew nonspacing mark U+059F, and communal chant. Remove those particulars and Symbolic Representation remains; retain them and Karne Parah is a stable named cantillation abstraction.
