Kashida¶
An Arabic-script justification technique that lengthens eligible cursive connections between letters, distributing horizontal expansion within words without changing their lexical characters.
Core Idea¶
Kashida, or tatweel, is controlled elongation of connecting strokes in Arabic-derived scripts to justify or rhythmically balance a line. The shaping process selects permissible joins and extends their connecting stroke, often in combination with space adjustment, while respecting script, calligraphic and readability conventions. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
