Key Informant¶
Gain deeper access to how a social system works by recruiting participants for their structural position — gatekeeper, broker, marginal participant, long-tenure incumbent, recent entrant — treating each account as positionally biased and structurally informative rather than population-representative.
Core Idea¶
A key informant is a participant who, by virtue of their structural position in a social system, offers more revealing access to how it actually works than a representative sample would. The leverage is positional, not personal: gatekeepers, cultural brokers, marginal participants, long-tenure incumbents, and recent entrants each occupy a vantage that exposes distinct tacit knowledge. The researcher recruits by position, treats accounts as positionally biased yet structurally informative, and validates by triangulating contrasting positions.
Scope of Application¶
The key informant is a fieldwork method whose home is ethnography, but its position-knowledge coupling re-instantiates wherever a differentiated human social system gives some positions disproportionate knowledge; the boundary is the edge of the social.

Clarity¶
Naming the key informant separates two sampling logics field research confuses: enumeration, which samples broadly so idiosyncrasy averages out, and position-targeted access, which samples narrowly into positions that compress the system's structure. Conflating them produces symmetric mistakes — reading a charismatic insider as representative, or dismissing them as anecdotal. It also reframes bias from defect into data: because leverage is positional, each skew is predictable and usable.
Manages Complexity¶
"How do we understand this social system?" is otherwise unbounded across hundreds of participants. The concept compresses the sprawl by replacing the population with a small inventory of structural positions, each with an epistemic profile fixed by location. The researcher asks which positions exist and recruits their holders, reads each account's bias off its position, and turns triangulation into a determinate operation on a few contrasts. Coverage failures read directly off the position list.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses diagnostic reasoning — reading an account's distortions off the informant's position and inferring blind spots from which positions are missing. It supports interventionist reasoning that recruits by position and triangulates contrasts to isolate the invariant, boundary-drawing that separates position-targeted access from enumeration and bias-as-data from bias-as-defect, and predictive reasoning that forecasts why a few well-placed informants beat a large representative sample.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within ethnography the concept transfers intact as mechanism, because the role-types are positions, not personalities, recurring wherever a differentiated social system does. Beyond ethnography the transfer is unusually strong precisely because every recurring setting — organizational research, intelligence, user research, threat intelligence, audit — is itself a human social system, so the position-knowledge coupling genuinely re-instantiates. That general pattern is carried by information_asymmetry, role, and network/social_capital; the ethnographic role vocabulary stays home, and invoking "key informant" for a non-social system is mere analogy.
