Koinophilia¶
An evolutionary hypothesis that mate choice favors individuals with common, population-typical traits and disfavors unusual or mutant phenotypes.
Core Idea¶
Koinophilia proposes that typical appearance correlates with developmental stability, local adaptation or species recognition and can reinforce reproductive isolation, but evidence must distinguish it from familiarity, frequency dependence and arbitrary preference. Choosers use multivariate deviation from a learned or inherited population norm as a mate cue, reducing reproduction by atypical phenotypes and feeding back to stabilize clustered trait distributions. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.

Clarity¶
