Learnscapes¶
School environments intentionally designed so their physical and ecological features support interactive learning.
Core Idea¶
A garden or outdoor area becomes a learnscape only when its design is tied to curriculum, participation and educational use, not merely landscaping. Students and community members shape and use site features as recurring contexts for observation, inquiry, stewardship and cross-curricular activity. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of environmental education. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the school and community, site and ecological context, learning objectives and curriculum, designed features, student interaction, participation and maintenance, environmental and social outcomes and evaluation are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
Learnscapes belongs to environmental education and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed environmental education carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, and comparison cases, then evaluate the school and community, site and ecological context, learning objectives and curriculum, designed features, student interaction, participation and maintenance, environmental and social outcomes and evaluation are explicit.
