Line of hereditary succession¶
Order eligible persons for inheritance of a hereditary office, title, or entitlement by applying a declared grant, statute, custom, kinship rule, and disqualification regime.
Core Idea¶
A line of hereditary succession is an ordered set of people who could inherit a hereditary office, dignity, title, or entitlement under a governing instrument and kinship rule. The line is constructed from descent facts filtered through eligibility, primogeniture form, status rules where legally relevant, and any special remainder in the grant. It is a normative-legal ordering, not a biological fact emitted by a family tree.
Starting from the founder or current holder, the rule traverses eligible descendants and collateral branches in a specified priority. Birth, death, marriage, legislation, renunciation, disqualification, and proof of parentage can change membership or order. A person earlier in line has priority if the entitlement opens, but may never inherit because a nearer branch later produces eligible descendants.
Scope of Application¶
The abstraction is literal wherever practitioners can identify the same constitutive roles, apply the same boundary tests, and obtain the same kind of output. The following habitats are uses of Line of hereditary succession itself, not metaphors based only on resemblance.
- Monarchical succession. Ordering eligible heirs under constitutional statute and custom.
- Peerage succession. Applying the remainder in a title's creation instrument.
- Genealogical proof. Establishing descent relevant to a claimed place.
- Legal history. Reconstructing how prior rules ordered candidates.
- Comparative institutions. Comparing absolute, preference, and elective-hereditary systems.
- Public explanation. Distinguishing current priority from certainty of inheritance.
Clarity¶
A clear account of Line of hereditary succession must preserve the recognition invariant stated in the Core Idea rather than rely on the title alone. Name the entitlement and governing instrument before listing candidates. State descent, priority, eligibility, and disqualification rules in force at the relevant date. Separate genealogical uncertainty from legal uncertainty. Do not transfer Crown rules to peerages or one patent's remainder to another title.
Manages Complexity¶
Line of hereditary succession manages complexity by replacing a diffuse field of observations or possible operations with a bounded role structure: hereditary entitlement supplies an office, title, dignity, or right can pass by descent.; governing instrument supplies statute, letters patent, charter, custom, or constitution defines the rule.; root holder supplies a founder or current holder anchors the descent graph.; kinship graph supplies documented parent-child and collateral relations supply candidate paths.; priority rule supplies primogeniture or another traversal orders eligible candidates..
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Identify the hereditary entitlement and legal date of analysis. 2. Locate the controlling statute, grant, constitution, or custom. 3. Build the relevant descent graph from authoritative records. 4. Apply the priority traversal one branch at a time. 5. Filter candidates under exact eligibility and remainder terms. 6. Distinguish apparent, presumptive, remote, and excluded positions where applicable. 7. Recompute after births, deaths, renunciations, or amendments.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The strict upward abstraction is Inheritance. Line of Hereditary Succession instantiates Inheritance because it governs prospective transfer of entitlement through descent while adding an ordered candidate line. Within hereditary title succession, the full mechanism transfers literally when the same roles and boundary tests recur. Beyond that domain, only the parent-level skeleton should travel. Reusing the label Line of hereditary succession after removing its constitutive vocabulary would hide a change of mechanism behind an analogy. The honest transfer rule is therefore two-stage: recognize the domain-specific pattern first, then lift only the parent relation that remains invariant under a substrate change.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Line of hereditary succession sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (96th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
