Lineage (genetic)¶
Track a chain of genetic descent through which inherited sequence states pass from ancestors to descendants while mutation and recombination create historically ordered differences.
Core Idea¶
A genetic lineage is a directed chain or branching history of biological descent whose members inherit genetic material from predecessor members, with mutation, recombination, segregation, and sampling determining how the transmitted states differ through time. Replication transmits sequence states along parent-descendant links, mutational events introduce new variants, recombination can combine histories from more than one parental source, and lineage-tracking evidence reconstructs or directly records the resulting paths.
Its autonomous residual is the descent-indexed transmission history of genetic states, including the possibility of branching and modification, rather than an allele, a taxonomic rank, an unrooted similarity group, or a complete species phylogeny.
Scope of Application¶
