Linked Open Data Release¶
Publish a dataset as a machine-traversable RDF graph with HTTP-dereferenceable identifiers, an explicit open license, and outbound links to other graphs — so downstream systems can resolve, link into, and traverse it without bilateral negotiation.
Core Idea¶
A linked open data release publishes a vocabulary or dataset as a machine-traversable graph so that downstream systems can ingest, link into, and traverse it as a node in a larger web of data. The commitment is conjunctive across five dimensions: an RDF graph model, HTTP-dereferenceable URIs as identifiers, an explicit open license, outbound cross-graph links, and access infrastructure (a SPARQL endpoint and standard-serialization dumps). Satisfying some but not all is not a partial release but a defective one with a specific excluded consumer class.
Scope of Application¶
A linked open data release lives on the semantic-web / linked-data substrate, where the five-commitment checklist and 5-star ladder apply literally; the publishing communities below vary in subject but adopt the identical RDF-plus-URIs-plus-SPARQL machinery.

Clarity¶
Naming the release dissolves what "we put the data online" lumps together: a CSV is open but not linked; an endpoint with no license is queryable but legally unusable; stable URIs pointing nowhere are a closed island. The 5-star ladder turns "is this good linked data?" into a graded, checkable punch list whose missing items map onto downstream failure modes. It also sharpens the key distinction — addressability is not equivalence; a cross-link is a claim, not a guarantee.
Manages Complexity¶
Integrating data across institutions is otherwise quadratic — a bilateral agreement, format conversion, and ambiguity-resolution per pair. The release collapses that tangle into a lookup against shared infrastructure: the five commitments reduce "is this usable?" to a fixed conjunction, and once satisfied, a consumer needs no bespoke schema — the URI resolves, the cross-links carry the traversal, the license reads off the artifact.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The conjunction licenses a diagnostic (read a consumption failure back to the missing commitment), a predictive inference (each missing star excludes a specific consumer class), an interventionist move (light the missing star, regain that consumer — remedies are commitment-specific), and a boundary-drawing rule that addressability is not equivalence, so a cross-graph traversal must not be read as certified identity.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the linked-data substrate the release transfers as a protocol, the five-commitment checklist and diagnostics carrying intact — but the strikingly varied communities are one substrate co-adopting one machinery, not the machinery generalizing. Beyond it, the substrate-independent kernel is open publication for interoperability; the named RDF/SPARQL/OWL machinery stays home. The cross-domain lesson should carry the parent primes traceability and translation-and-conceptual-bridging, not "LOD release" as named.
