Loudness¶
The auditory percept ordering sounds from quiet to loud, related nonlinearly to sound pressure, frequency, spectrum, duration, context, and listener.
Core Idea¶
Loudness is a subjective attribute of auditory sensation operationalized through psychophysical judgments and standardized models rather than equated directly with physical intensity. The auditory system filters sound by frequency and time, compresses level, integrates spectral components, and adapts to context, producing judgments that can be mapped to sones, phons, or categorical scales. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
