Makespan¶
The elapsed time from the start of the earliest scheduled operation to completion of the latest operation or job.
Core Idea¶
Makespan is commonly written Cmax and minimized to balance parallel resources or shorten project completion, but its value depends on release times, calendars, precedence, preemption and the schedule's time origin. Each task receives a feasible interval under resource and precedence constraints; the maximum completion time minus the declared schedule start yields the schedule horizon. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Makespan belongs to scheduling theory and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed scheduling theory carrier, including its objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundary cases, and comparison targets, then evaluate the jobs and operations, processing times, resources and capacities, release and setup times, precedence, preemption and calendar rules, feasible schedule, time origin, completion times and maximum or elapsed-time convention are explicit.
