It operates across three independent axes: production (fabricated versus edited versus untouched), attribution (misrepresented source or occasion), and context (a genuine artifact deployed in a lying frame). The defining commitment is that the harm is consumption-as-unmanipulated, not the artifact's existence.
Scope of Application¶
Manipulated media lives across the channels of the information ecosystem — every setting where an artifact's link to its source event can be silently severed.
- News and journalism — deepfakes, shallowfakes, and miscaptioned footage entering reporting.

Clarity¶
The label converts "I no longer know what to believe" into a located defect: the artifact-to-source link broken at a specific point by a specific operation, shifting the problem off the audience onto the artifact. Its sharper work is forcing apart the three axes the field collapses into "fake," preventing the costly error of aiming forensic tooling at a context manipulation no forensics can see.
Manages Complexity¶
An ever-growing taxonomy of deception techniques reduces to one defect — a severed artifact-to-source link — read along three independent, roughly binary coordinates. Those coordinates determine which detection method can catch the break, at which pipeline layer the intervention sits, and which cases defeat the forensic tooling practitioners instinctively reach for.
