Meander Cutoff¶
Read a river's sinuous life cycle as a single feedback in which outer-bank erosion both lengthens the loop and narrows its neck until a flood breaches it, abruptly capturing flow through a shorter steeper path and abandoning the loop as an oxbow.
Core Idea¶
A meander cutoff is the geomorphic event in which a sinuous channel, grown ever more curved through outer-bank erosion and inner-bank deposition, self-intersects across the narrow neck of an oxbow loop and abruptly reroutes flow through a shorter, steeper path, abandoning the long loop. The mechanism is a feedback-driven instability: erosion lengthens the path and narrows the neck each flood cycle until a breach lets the steeper route capture the flow within hours to days.

Clarity¶
Naming the cutoff pulls apart two channel changes that share a planform but run on incommensurate timescales: slow lateral migration over years to centuries, and near-instantaneous rerouting when a neck breaches in a single flood. It identifies the cutoff not as an accident but as the expected fate of any sufficiently developed loop, since the feedback that builds the meander is the one that destroys it. It also separates neck from chute cutoffs and frames the event as a routing change, not a regime change.

A meandering river otherwise reads as an undifferentiated mass of change, each bend its own tracking problem. The construct compresses it to a deterministic life cycle driven by one feedback: any developed loop has a single expected fate, and continuous deformation resolves into named stages — growing loop, narrowing neck, breach, infilling oxbow.
