Media Synchronicity Theory (Dennis and Valacich, 1999) refines Media Richness Theory by decomposing a medium into five capabilities — transmission velocity, parallelism, symbol-set diversity, rehearsability, and reprocessability — and proposing that the right medium is determined not by overall richness but by the match between the medium's capability profile and the task's communication process. The critical cut is between convergence (building shared meaning rapidly and jointly, in real time) and conveyance (transmitting information the receiver processes at their own pace).

Clarity

The construct's central move is to replace the single richness scale with a task-process distinction the scale concealed: every task is doing one of two jobs — convergence or conveyance — and the two want opposite media. This dissolves the assumption that media line up on one ladder with "better" at the top. The five-dimension decomposition sharpens it, making legible that rehearsability and reprocessability are exactly what a conveyance task needs and a high-synchronicity medium suppresses.

Manages Complexity

The medium-selection problem is doubly sprawling — many channels, open-ended tasks. The theory compresses both: any channel reduces to a point in a fixed five-coordinate profile, and any task collapses to a single convergence/conveyance bit. That bit is the master variable, selecting which of the five dimensions matter and in which direction, so fit and mismatch cost read off it — and it extends to composite work, where a project is a sequence of phases and the medium switches as the bit flips.
