Memory confusion protocol¶
A social-cognition experiment that infers spontaneous categorization from systematic errors in remembering which observed person made which statement.
Core Idea¶
Participants encounter statements paired with speakers, complete an intervening task, and later attribute statements to speakers; excess within-category over between-category misattributions is interpreted as evidence that the category organized memory. Categorical encoding makes members share retrieval cues, increasing confusion among same-category individuals while preserving overall recognition controls and counterbalancing exposure. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
