Mental Rotation¶
The cognitive process of imagining an object rotating continuously through intermediate orientations to align it with a comparison object before judging a match — diagnosed by reaction time that scales linearly with angular disparity.

Clarity¶
Mental rotation gave the imagery debate an empirical fulcrum: the linear reaction-time scaling decides analog against symbolic representation. It also separates two operations "deciding whether these match" runs together — the rotational alignment and the post-alignment comparison — letting a researcher localize where spatial performance is taxed, in producing the shared frame or in reading the relation within it.

"Spatial reasoning" is otherwise a high-dimensional black box of heterogeneous tasks with no common currency. Mental rotation compresses a slice of it onto one graded measure — the reaction-time-by-angle line — projecting the latent process onto two readable parameters: the slope (interpolation rate) and the intercept-plus-error (comparison). Within cognitive science the mechanism transfers across stimulus content and subfields — the rate-limited analog interpolation and its slope/intercept diagnostics carry without translation. Beyond a cognitive system with imagery capacity, the align-then-compare structure belongs to the parents transformation, comparison, and simulation (a graphics pipeline is transformation, not mental rotation). In applied fields it reaches chiefly as a measure of latent spatial ability, useful only insofar as that instrument validly indexes the capacity.
