Meta-communication¶
Communication that frames how another message, code or relationship is to be interpreted.
Core Idea¶
Meta-communication may be explicit language, prosody, gesture, typography or contextual convention, and a cue can qualify either message coding or the relationship between participants. Participants emit or infer secondary cues that select an interpretive frame for a focal message, disambiguating play, irony, authority, intimacy or seriousness and permitting repair when frames conflict. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Meta-communication belongs to communication theory and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed communication theory carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundaries, and comparison targets, then evaluate the communicators and relationship, focal message, meta-communicative cue and channel, proposed frame or code, temporal scope, uptake evidence, conflicting frames and resulting interpretation or repair are explicit. Clarity¶

A claim should name the carrier, the governing operation or relation, the applicable assumptions, and the recognition test. A bare label is insufficient because the name Meta-communication can be used for a formal identity, an implementation, or a neighboring result unless carrier and convention are stated.
Manages Complexity¶
Without the abstraction, an analyst must reason directly over many local details: the carrier roles, admissibility assumptions, competing conventions, derived invariants, boundary cases, and proof or validation obligations specific to Meta-communication. Meta-communication compresses them into the roles in the structural signature. That compression permits comparison across instances without erasing the variables that determine validity.
