Methodological individualism¶
Explain social outcomes through individuals, their beliefs, incentives, actions and interactions, treating collective entities as explananda or shorthand rather than autonomous causal agents.
Core Idea¶
Methodological individualism is the explanatory principle that social phenomena should be derived from individual-level action and interaction rather than irreducible group-level agency. Actors respond to beliefs, incentives and institutions; strategic and network interactions aggregate decisions into equilibria, norms or unintended macro patterns. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of social science methodology. It is microfoundational explanatory discipline without the stronger ontological claim that institutions or emergent structures are unreal.
