Miller Columns¶
Adjacent lists expose successive levels of a hierarchy, with a selection revealing its children while earlier levels remain in view.
Core Idea¶
Miller columns display a hierarchy as side-by-side lists. Selecting a parent item shows its children in the next list, while earlier lists remain available. The arrangement shows where the current branch came from and lets a user switch branches without repeatedly returning to the top. Finder's folder view and a government topic-selection component use the same structure with different kinds of content.[ref-a88c7e2be4b9][ref-ad381fdffe82]
The pattern is the column-and-selection rule, not one product. It does not require a fixed number of columns or always exactly one selected row; Apple's NSBrowser supports multiple selection. Apple's guidance also allows deep hierarchies where people move back and forth often, contrary to a shallow-only reading.[ref-554a19dbd906][ref-a88c7e2be4b9]
Scope of Application¶
In Finder, nested folders provide the hierarchy: selecting a folder reveals its contents to the right while ancestor folders remain accessible. A leaf file may show details rather than another child list.[^ref-a88c7e2be4b9]
The original alphagov miller-columns-element used nested government topics: selecting a parent topic exposed its subtopics in a following list. Its README example places a parenting/childcare topic above divorce/separation and childcare/early-years subtopics. That standalone component is retired and migrated into Whitehall; the example documents a design, not its current deployment.[^ref-ad381fdffe82]
Apple describes its iTunes Genre/Artist/Album column browser as categories that narrow matching songs; that is not automatically a Miller-column hierarchy. If the next list contains independently filtered attribute values rather than a selected item's children, it is faceted filtering. No universal high-fanout or modest-depth requirement is established by the original sources checked here.[^ref-a843a9e05606]
Clarity¶
Ask: Does choosing an item reveal that item's children while its preceding levels remain visible? If yes, the core Miller-column relation is present. A multi-column table instead places attributes of one record beside one another; a one-pane menu replaces the preceding list; an outline indents descendants within one list. All may represent related data, but not by this exact schema.[ref-a88c7e2be4b9][ref-ad381fdffe82]
Manages Complexity¶
The interface exposes the currently relevant branch of a large hierarchy without discarding its ancestor context. This helps a user see the route, choose the next child and return to an earlier choice. It also spends horizontal space for each visible level, so deep paths and long labels may need scrolling or adjustable column widths; Apple explicitly recommends resizable columns.[^ref-a88c7e2be4b9]
Abstract Reasoning¶
To test a candidate interface, change a selection in an earlier column. If a later column then displays the newly selected parent's children, the hierarchy is being represented correctly; if it continues to show descendants of the old branch, the visible path is misleading. If the later list instead independently filters by another attribute, a facet model may better describe the design.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The same roles appear in file navigation and topic-taxonomy selection: hierarchy, adjacent level lists, selected parent, next child list and retained upstream context. This is literal transfer of an interface technique. It presupposes live Hierarchy as the represented relation, but a hierarchy need not use columns, so the proposed DAG edge is composition/presupposes rather than “Miller columns are a kind of hierarchy.” Navigation, tabbing and faceted classification are comparisons, not asserted strict parents.[ref-a88c7e2be4b9][ref-ad381fdffe82]
