Minimum viable population¶
A model-dependent lower population bound associated with a specified probability of persistence over a stated time horizon under demographic, environmental, genetic and catastrophic uncertainty.
Core Idea¶
Minimum viable population is the smallest population size estimated to meet an explicitly chosen probability of survival for a chosen period under a population-viability model. Demographic variation, environmental fluctuation, inbreeding, loss of genetic diversity and rare catastrophes are simulated or approximated to estimate extinction probability across starting sizes. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
