Missing Denominator¶
Expose a count that only looks like information by firing one substrate-independent question — out of how many? — since a numerator reported without its reference population wears the shape of a rate while blocking every quantitative inference the reader needs.
Core Idea¶
Missing denominator is the failure mode in which a count is reported without the reference population that would make it a rate. "Twenty deaths from the new drug" imports the shape of a risk ratio but supplies only its numerator; without "out of how many prescriptions?" the reader cannot judge whether the figure is alarming, routine, or under-baseline. A rate is the unit that licenses inference about magnitude, comparison, and trend; truncating it blocks that inference while feeling quantitative.
