Motion-Triggered Harm¶
The inclusive-design failure in which interface animation, autoplay, parallax, or screen flash exceeds a susceptible user's physiological tolerance — a presentation channel that doubles as a harm channel, delivering an involuntary stimulus the median-calibrated design never accounted for.
Core Idea¶
Motion-triggered harm is the accessibility failure in which interface animation, autoplay, parallax, or screen flash exceeds a user's physiological or neurological tolerance, causing discomfort, injury, or seizure. The mechanism is a presentation-channel mismatch: the channel delivering information (motion, luminance, frame rate, haptics) is also one along which a fraction of users carry tight tolerance the population-average design ignored. The harm is involuntary, and WCAG criteria and prefers-reduced-motion encode the primary defence.

Clarity¶
Naming motion-triggered harm splits a design element into two roles a designer usually sees only one of: animation as information design and animation as harm vector. Motion is not aesthetically free, because the channel of visible movement carries tight physiological tolerance for a subpopulation. The sharpest fix is locating the involuntary exposure: because the user meets the stimulus without opt-out, honouring reduced-motion and capping flash become load-bearing requirements, and the burden sits with the designer.
Manages Complexity¶
The designer would otherwise face a daunting cross-product of susceptible populations by presentation dynamics, most of them invisible at median tolerance. Motion-triggered harm collapses every cell to one question — does this deliver an involuntary stimulus where some subpopulation carries tighter tolerance? — and routes the answer to a small set of standards-encoded handles: WCAG flash caps, one reduced-motion switch, Pause/Stop/Hide, a static alternative, an opt-in default. Designing safely becomes a checklist, not a per-user clinical assessment.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses a diagnostic move (reason forward from the physical channel to the susceptible population, not waiting for a complaint the harmed users are least positioned to file), an interventionist move (route each channel to a standards-encoded handle that disarms it), boundary-drawing (involuntariness places fault with the designer; the harm lives in the gap between design envelope and affected envelope), and a predictive move (harm concentrates in the least-heard tail, motivating an opt-in default).
