Motivating operation¶
An antecedent condition that temporarily changes both the effectiveness of a consequence as reinforcement or punishment and the current frequency of behavior historically related to that consequence.
Core Idea¶
A motivating operation changes the momentary value of a consequence and evokes or abates behavior that has produced that consequence. Deprivation, satiation or another condition alters how strongly a consequence functions, and the established reinforcement history correspondingly changes current response probability. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of behavior analysis. It is antecedent motivational variable distinguished by coupled consequence-value and behavior effects. That residual remains recognizable when examples, notation, scale, or implementation change, but it disappears if the carrier is mistyped, the condition that both a value-altering effect on a consequence and a behavior-altering effect on related responses are supported under the declared context fails, a neighboring object is substituted, or notation and topical resemblance replace the constitutive test.
Scope of Application¶
