Core Idea

A multivariate glyph encodes several variables for one observation in distinct features of one compact mark. A consistent mapping lets many such marks be compared. A NOAA station plot uses circle fill for cloud cover, a barb for wind, and positioned numbers for other measured fields; the complete station mark is placed at its geographic site. Chernoff's original face construction instead assigns dimensions of one statistical vector to drawing parameters, including nose length and mouth curvature as facial feature channels. These are variants of the same visual relation, not the same notation.[ref-f927b847e887][ref-31ac9e12b3c1]

Scope of Application

Glyphs can be arrayed on maps or in grids. The map/grid placement is optional; the defining feature is one compound mark per multivariate case. A wind barb is only the wind component of a station plot, not an alias of the full glyph family. NOAA's station code and Chernoff's face-feature assignments are different, domain-bound decoding conventions.[ref-f927b847e887][ref-31ac9e12b3c1]

Clarity

Identify the observation, the variables, their assigned features and the scales. Ask whether reordering or rescaling features changes the visual pattern; star-glyph evidence shows that axis order can affect comparison performance.[^ref-dc8d73c7968d]

Manages Complexity

The mark compresses several columns into one visible unit, making patterns and outliers easier to scan. It may sacrifice precise value reading and can suffer perceptual bias or clutter.

Abstract Reasoning

Define the case-level attributes, assign stable visual channels, place the marks for the intended task, and test whether the intended comparisons remain legible. The glyph is a representation, not an analysis result on its own.

Knowledge Transfer

The multi-attribute-to-compound-mark pattern transfers from meteorology to statistical graphics. As a specialized Representation, it retains a target-to-mark mapping and a decoding convention in both settings. Field positions, perceptual salience and required legends must be reconsidered in each design.

Parents (1) — more general patterns this builds on

  • Multivariate Glyph is a kind of Representation Prime

A multivariate glyph maps one observation's attributes to features of one visible mark.

Condition / exception Strict only for an actual multivariate data glyph with a specified variable-to-visible-feature mapping; decorative icons, single-variable wind barbs by themselves, and collections of separate charts are outside this identity.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Multivariate Glyph sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (60th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
