Musical Texture

Classify a musical passage by how many simultaneous melodic lines it contains, whether they are independent or doubled, and whether one dominates while the others provide coordinated support.

Core Idea

Musical texture describes how simultaneous musical lines are organized: how many are perceptually active, whether they are independent or rhythmically aligned, and whether one line dominates while others accompany it. Monophony, homophony, polyphony, and heterophony are major texture families.

The canonical identity is narrower than the phrase’s everyday use. It requires a musical interval of analysis, concurrent sounding parts, relations of melodic independence and rhythmic coordination, and a perceptual hierarchy among parts. Instrument count alone does not determine texture because several instruments can double one line.

Structural Signature

  • A musical passage or span containing one or more sounding pitch streams.
  • A rule for deciding when sounding parts count as the same line or independent voices.
  • A line-count axis separating one line from several simultaneous lines.
  • A dominance axis separating equal independent voices from lead-plus-support organization.
