Mytheme¶
A proposed minimal structural unit of myth, typically a relation among characters, actions and themes that gains meaning through bundles and transformations across related narratives.
Core Idea¶
A mytheme is the smallest recurrent relation treated as meaningful within a structural analysis of myth. Narratives are segmented into relational units, aligned across variants and read in bundles whose oppositions reveal underlying cultural structure. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of structuralist anthropology. It is structuralist analogue of a phoneme for transformation-based myth comparison. That residual remains recognizable when examples, notation, scale, or implementation change, but it disappears if the carrier is mistyped, the condition that the unit is relational and comparative, not merely a motif or isolated word, and segmentation is justified across a myth corpus fails, a neighboring object is substituted, or notation and topical resemblance replace the constitutive test.
