Narrative identity¶
A theory of personal identity in which people integrate reconstructed past, interpreted present and imagined future into an evolving life story that supplies unity and purpose.
Core Idea¶
Narrative identity is the internalized and evolving story through which a person organizes life experience into a sense of self. Selective remembering and interpretation connect events through plots and themes, and repeated retelling revises continuity, agency and meaning as circumstances change. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of personality psychology. It is temporally integrated selfhood constructed through life-story form. That residual remains recognizable when examples, notation, scale, or implementation change, but it disappears if the carrier is mistyped, the condition that identity claims are organized narratively across time rather than reduced to isolated traits or factual autobiography alone fails, a neighboring object is substituted, or notation and topical resemblance replace the constitutive test.
