Native Species¶
Classify a taxon's occurrence relative to a specified place, time baseline, and dispersal history: native where presence lies within its past or present natural range or was reached by its own dispersal, rather than by direct or indirect human introduction.
Core Idea¶
A native species is a taxon whose occurrence in a specified geographic area lies within its natural past or present range, including areas it can reach and occupy by its own dispersal systems, rather than through direct or indirect human introduction. Nativity is therefore a relation among a taxon, a place, a time baseline, and an arrival pathway—not an intrinsic property that a species possesses everywhere.
The same species can be native in one region and alien in another. Tilapia species, for example, are native within parts of Africa but have been introduced by people elsewhere. A taxon can also be native to a country yet human-introduced into a locality outside its natural range within that country.
Scope of Application¶
The concept organizes regional floras and faunas, protected-area inventories, restoration reference conditions, biosecurity lists, environmental impact assessment, conservation translocation, forestry, agriculture, and invasion research.
In biogeographic inventories, native status answers whether an occurrence belongs to the reconstructed natural distribution. Global registers explicitly record origin and allow a species to be native-alien within one political territory when human transport moved it beyond its natural subnational range.
Clarity¶
Three questions resolve most confusion.
Native where? A continent-level statement may hide a subregional introduction. A species native to southern Europe may be non-native at a northern site if humans transported it beyond natural dispersal. Political borders are convenient reporting units but need not match biogeographic barriers.
Manages Complexity¶
Species redistribution presents an enormous record-linkage problem: taxonomy changes, observations are incomplete, political regions cut across ranges, introduction pathways are poorly documented, and populations can disappear and return. Native status compresses this history into a reusable relational label that supports inventories, risk screens, and management planning.

Knowledge Transfer¶
Within ecology, the structure transfers exactly across plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms; across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems; and from research inventories to conservation and biosecurity practice. Each application needs the same taxon, place, baseline, pathway, and evidence roles.
Across jurisdictions, the structure transfers while operational cutoffs may not. One national list may use a historical date; another may use a natural-range reconstruction. Data exchange therefore requires carrying the definition and scale with the label.
