Score an event's fitness for coverage as a single relational property — computed against a specific outlet's criteria-bundle, the day's competing rivals, and a decaying window — that systematically diverges from the event's objective importance.

Core Idea

The relational property an event has when it satisfies a news institution's selection criteria under finite editorial capacity. Where news values name the criteria, newsworthiness names the outcome of applying them: an event clears an outlet's coverage threshold ahead of rivals when its impact, novelty, proximity, conflict, and visual richness score high enough. It is institutionally relative, temporally bounded and competitive, and systematically diverges from importance — large but slow, undramatic events routinely lose to vivid trivial ones.
