Nocebo¶
Worsening symptoms or adverse outcomes caused or amplified by negative expectations, conditioning and treatment context rather than the specific harmful action of an intervention.
Core Idea¶
A nocebo effect is an adverse change attributable to negative expectation or contextual learning rather than the specific pharmacological or physical action under evaluation. Verbal suggestion, observation and conditioning alter attention, anxiety, central processing and symptom reporting, potentially engaging physiological pathways that intensify experienced harm. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of health psychology. It is negative contextual and expectancy contribution to health outcomes, complementary to placebo improvement.
