Non-representational theory¶
A human-geography approach studying embodied practice, affect and ongoing performance rather than treating representations as the primary carriers of social reality.
Core Idea¶
The name does not deny representation altogether; it redirects inquiry toward preconscious, more-than-human and eventful processes and has been criticized for access, description and politics. Researchers attend to movement, habit, sensation, material affordances and encounters through which worlds are enacted before or alongside reflective narration. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of human geography. It is the domain-specific identity determined by the theorist and version, site and practice, bodies and nonhuman participants, temporal event, affect and habit, method of access, role retained for discourse and representation, reflexivity and political or ethical stakes are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
