Norm of reciprocity¶
A social norm that calls for returning benefits with benefits and responding to harms or refusals in a correspondingly contingent manner.
Core Idea¶
Reciprocal obligation differs from gratitude, unconditional benevolence and the Golden Rule, and the content and proportionality of an expected return vary across relationships and cultures.[1] An actor interprets another’s treatment as a benefit or harm, attributes an obligation or permission to respond in kind and chooses a return action whose valence and scale are socially evaluated. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of social psychology. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the interacting parties, initiating act and perceived valence, shared expectation of contingent return, timing and proportionality, direct or generalized recipient, sanctions for nonreciprocation, cultural and relational scope and distinction from strategic exchange are explicit.
